Interior Design: Fundamentals & Establishing a Successful Business— JD School of Design recently conducted an interactive two-part seminar “Introduction to Interior Design and Its Business Aspects,” especially for the students of St. Francis College and CMTI Institute. The two-hour interactive session aimed at a deeper understanding of the interior designing arena while more so strategy rather than creativity of the industry business.

Session 1: The Craft of Interior Design

The first session dealt with the basics of interior design, asking students to note that it is much more than looking pretty. This was then how interior design shapes space to be functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing with a contrast of interior decoration, which only mostly deals with aesthetics of surfaces such as colour and furniture arrangement.

Participants were subjected to a historic change in interior design from an ancient practice to a highly developed modern discipline. Current design movements, Minimalism and Modernism, were examined to underscore how these contemporary movements are impactful on the design of contemporary practice, particularly in the ways these movements encourage the pursuit of beauty with practice in simplicity and sustainability.

Other basic philosophies of interior design were colour theory, space planning, and layout design that create mood and functionality in any given space. Discussions on lighting and materials were delved into, and how these selections greatly enhance the effectiveness of a design.

The collaborative process of design was highlighted, as great interior design projects often rely on engineers, architects, and other professionals for effective collaboration. The session also introduced students to the latest technologies: smart home solutions and 3D printing, among others, in displaying how innovation nowadays can radically transform the design process from being more interactive, efficient, and sustainable.

Pricing and budget control of projects was deemed another fundamental subject matter. The students were familiarized with different pricing models, including the application of hourly charges, flat fees, and cost-plus pricing. Estimation of project costs and negotiations with clients was included. Discussions included the use of contracts and legal aspects, enabling the students to deal with client relations and agreements with confidence.

Finally, the seminar emphasized the need for long-term client relationships. Clients old enough to be customers are normally the best sources of referrals for any designer, and such good relationships could help bring new opportunities and collaborations.
