Introducing “Future Weave: Ghongadi Blanket Chronicles,” an ecological and experimental clothing line containing products of racialized students under the supervision of D Deepti Kumbhar, MSC in Fashion Design from the JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore. This collection was inspired by the indigenous Ghongadi blanket, which is a handwoven woolen blanket made by shepherds in rural Maharashtra. Using the design of the Ghongadi and adjusting to the cool-toned, comfortable colors, this collection merges tradition with beautiful modern winter wear.
Inspired by the Ghongadi blanket, a snippet of the “Future Weave” collection will also come in handy. The traditional dress of the Ghongadi is worn by women of different states in India, is called Kambal or Kambli, and is made of the finest Desi wool. It is made using the traditional hand spinning and hand weaving techniques that are inherited in its making. The inherent characteristics of wool, including biodegradability, elasticity, breathability, and being odorless, make it the perfect fabric for sustainable fashion.
The idea behind the creation of this collection is to maintain the techniques of making Ghongadi while at the same time providing a new and contemporary form of it. It is derived from the natural look that is embedded in the blanket as well as the people who come together to work on it. The present collection uses the weaving techniques of the Ghongadi and also the pattern of work that the shepherds use in the craft.
Future Weave” does not contradict the concepts of sustainability and ecological friendliness. The blanket made with the material from the Ghongadi plant is a perfect example of sustainable fashion because it bears natural, green, and fair attributes. Through the main raw material of ghongadi, the desires of mass production and exploitation of our environment are avoided in the collection.
The released collection is quite professional in terms of its color range of black, blue, and white. These colors are said to be related to the winter period, ice, and calmness; they are ideal to be used in producing winter wear. The cool tones make the garments look hi-tech and calm, which makes them look even more visually appealing. The series of the released collection is called “Future Weave,” and it is made especially for the winter clothing, which is warm and comfortable with prominence on the magnificent futuristic designs.
