Heritage Denim – JD Design Awards 2024

Collectively and exclusively, this home-grown ethnic outfit dubbed “Heritage Denim” is a creation of Neha.K.M. and Bandla Soumya, the students of the MSC in Fashion Design from JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore. It symbolizes the continuity between the past and the future, showing the different generations of people through contemporary denim and traditional Indian elements. Heritage Denim is targeted toward women fashion lovers within the age range of 24–30 years and focuses on presenting the cultural heritage in combination with the freedom and changes that fashion has brought.

Thus, Heritage Denim focuses on experimentation within the fields of cultural hybridity and art. Stimulated by Cameo Art decoratives that exist in Indian walls, alpana motives are mingled with ethnic modern denim sets. Alpana art work and various other embroidery and laser cutting works splendidly enhance the appearance of denim garments by incorporating patterns and motifs that have historical context. This blend rekindles conventional art and seems to rediscover ethnicity through the latest fashion trends that are more diverse.

The collection appeals to fashion lovers who like quasi-ethnic wear made out of denim and those who celebrate the culture of the origin of jeans. So, every piece of clothing has her story—the story of Alpana traditional design within which a girl or woman would feel connected and strongly rooted with the tradition that has been preserved in the family. “Heritage Denim” provokes a desire and appreciation for Indian forms of art, making the viewers aware of the craftsmanship incorporated into modern fashion.

JDDA 2024

This collection is oppositional, perfect for the theme of heritage, which aims to bring the future together with fashion innovation. Because society is shifting to a future where ethnic ready-to-wear fashion is at the forefront, this collection is a fitting preparation for the present and future market trends. That is why such an unprecedented combination of sleeve prints reminiscing about historical Alpana patterns and the Jean, which is acknowledged as the most universal fabric of the contemporary world, has been designed.

Denim is selected as the main element, let alone its endurance and versatility, to be used in the creation of the collection. Blue tones are predominant with respect to the shades, keeping the denim retro and sensual and supporting the elaborate geometric patterns of the Alpana techniques expressed by laser cutting and embroidery. In blending ethnic art found in the Alpana, they bring out the essence of India’s special place in today’s fashion industry in a classic and luxurious way.
