“Kaizen,” a beautiful collection by Anarghya Alias Oshin P. Inamadar, a student of the BSC in Fashion Design program at the JD Institute of Fashion Technology Bangalore won the “Golden Needle Award” at the JD Design Awards 2024. “Kaizen,” takes us on a magical journey inspired by the delicate butterfly. Butterflies, symbols of life’s fragile beauty, are facing challenges from pollution, rising temperatures, and other ecological problems.
The decisions of the ‘Kaizen’ structure were based on the wings of butterflies, which have very delicate translucent surfaces and bright pigments in them resembling a feather of a peacock. These wings are not only beautiful but very sturdy and a necessity for protection. In this collection the wings are depicted as armor as the butterflies adapt in order to live. The wings become a cover to ensure that the butterfly does not get affected by unfavorable weather conditions or does not get hunted by other creatures. This concept is introduced in the collection of materials, which represent the strength and the attractiveness of the wings of a butterfly.
Butterflies are also associated with changes and the process of life. They hatch from eggs and turn into caterpillars, then become cocoons and lastly, butterflies. This is similar to the life process where there is the occurrence of change and hardship but one gets transformed in the process. Hence, the “Kaizen” collection embraces this process in designs that depict the power bench-marked with vulnerability of a butterfly. The details and long flowing gowns depict the beauty of these wonderful creatures , and the sentiments that even though we may not be able to fly; we can change.
The focus of the “Kaizen” collection is as relevant as its name, which is why the butterfly means both strength and frailty. The designs consist of rather elongated parts that refer to the wings of the butterfly and that appear solid and architectural. These wings have a layer of scutes, just like the materials of this collection: rexine and stones. It is therefore absolutely fitting that duchesse satin and antique satin are applied to the outfits as they are graceful, giving a slim outline that captures the other aspect of the butterfly: the gentle. This balance between strength and softness tells us that life is not so simple and people are good not only when they are aggressive.
The shades employed in the “Kaizen” collection are inspired by the patterns on butterfly wings while the materials to be used are also identified. Cut-out and sheer fabrics with satin lacing on them add sex appeal while antique satin and duchess satin make the outfits look royal. All these materials also generate the impression of something in motion, like the beating of a butterfly’s wings.
