Charishma Herschal

A Larger View of Fashion:

When Charishma was asked why she chose the BSc in Fashion and Apparel Design programme, she said that the course at JD School of Design wasn’t a normal course to have as a prospective undergraduate.

Charishma, who completed this course proudly holding a 7th rank from Bengaluru City University (BCU), was not only interested in the creative side of fashion; she wanted a holistic understanding. “Unlike other courses,” she explains, “JD School of Design offered a broader knowledge of the field.” She learned aspects of science, technology and management in addition to design. It was this multifaceted approach that initially drew Charishma to JD School of Design and set the path for her exciting journey in the world of fashion.

Whirlwind of Emotions: Growth and Lessons Learned

Charishma’s three years at JD School of Design flew by and she believes that it was definitely a whirlwind of emotions and memories. She was entrusted with responsibilities and thrived under pressure. “Our batch has always been known for being out of the ordinary,” she says, “and somehow that made us set a benchmark for ourselves that we knew we’d always surpass.” This constant pursuit of excellence has taken Charishma to new heights and made her a versatile professional.

Mentoring and Support: Pillars of Success

Looking back, Charishma recognises the crucial role of her mentors. “It feels surreal,” she says, “and the only reason it was possible was because of the guidance and support of my mentors.” Acknowledging the unwavering patience of her well-wishers, she insists that her achievements are a testament to the collective efforts of her mentors, family and friends.

Time Management and Communication: Skills for the Fashion Industry

Charishma identifies two key skills honed at the JD School of Design: time management and communication. She realised how important it is to know how to manage time effectively, and she reflected that the fast pace of the fashion industry requires this skill. JD School of Design has allowed her to thrive in this vital area and helped her gain confidence in communication, which also became a cornerstone. “It’s important to communicate about literally everything.” She also emphasises the spirit of collaboration that thrives in the fashion world.

JDDA: A Humbling But Priceless Experience

Charishma agrees that the JD Design Awards Project (JDDA) was definitely the hardest project she had to go through. “I’ve always been confident working in a team,” she admits, “but JDDA really humbled me.” From negotiation to compromise, disagreements to pressure and validation, JDDA launched Charishma into the real world of fashion collaboration. Charishma looks back and sees the JD Design Awards as a pivotal moment—a glimpse into the industry beyond the walls of academia. The two major lessons learned are: the desire to do better and all of this contributed to her growth and development.

Signature Style: Taking Notes by Herself

While Charishma doesn’t highlight a specific design project, she does reveal her unique signature style. Her carefully composed notes say it all: “I used to take really fancy notes and write everything in different fonts, just to make it all up.” This creativity and attention to detail paint a picture of a student who was not afraid to express herself. Her thought process and design management skills became a recognisable brand, a testament to her personality and passion.

From JD School of Design graduate to Saks Fifth Avenue Associate

Today, Charishma enjoys working as a buying associate in Buying Operations at Saks Fifth Avenue. Her journey from JD to becoming an employee of a respected fashion house is a testament to the institute’s holistic approach. Charishma’s story offers valuable fodder for budding fashion professionals.

Her final advice is simple but powerful: “Be confident and open to criticism and feedback. Keep trying and doing your best. Your only competition is you, and your goal should be to be better than the old you.” With this mantra in mind, Charishma Herschal’s journey in the fashion world is just beginning.
