In this competitive world of design, where creativity needs to go hand in hand with strategic thinking, one needs to understand the dynamics of the industry and how to present one’s work to make it big. JD School of Design, a top design school in Bangalore, is committed to innovation and excellence, recently conducted an enriching expert session led by the internationally famous fashion designer and industry expert, Mr. Gaurav Mondal.
The session, “An Industry Expert Session on Understanding the Fashion Industry and the Importance of Portfolio,” shows how JD School of Design believes in imparting theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the design industry to its students. The course goals were further enlightened by a design maestro who brought over 20 years of experience in the fashion and design industries—Mr. Gaurav Mondal.
He had a career that has seen him work for such global brands as Paul Smith, CK Jeans, and Armani Exchange, apart from the big homegrown ones like Wills Lifestyle and AMPM Fashion. Mr Mondal is a brand strategist and co-founder of the design consultancy Brandment and the design studio Cor de Rosa. He exhibited collections in New Delhi, Italy, and Singapore; he played a major role in raising many D2C brands. His experience and knowledge in the industry were invaluable to the students at JD School of Design.
Linking Theory to Practical Application
The session was quite elaborate in its rundown of the inner mechanisms of the fashion industry, right from the global market dynamics to the production processes that take a design from concept to retail. Mr Mondal also stressed the fact that knowledge of these processes is of interest not only to a fashion designer but to every design professional who aims to create work that has an impact and is commercially effective. He presented his approach in a way that gave the students a sweeping view of the industry and how to connect the theoretical knowledge with the practical application of the same.
Building a Great Portfolio
The session focused on the critical issue of a professional portfolio. Dealing with the competitive design industry, where skill and creativity are the major display cabinets, a good portfolio is often the magic that opens doors.
Mr. Mondal shared with the students some practical tips on making and maintaining a standout portfolio. He urged students to highlight their unique styles and technical abilities. He further shared the inclusion of high-quality photography, technical drawings, and a clear narrative describing the designer’s vision and expertise.
Networking and professional growth
Another aspect that Mr. Mondal emphasised was the necessity for networking and professional growth. He shared with the students how the network in the industry can be formed and brought into action during an internship, while going for job interviews, or even as peer collaborations. The session was structured to inform and motivate students to strive towards their goals.
