The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a strong testament to the love and bond shared between brothers and sisters that have prevailed in India since time immemorial. Hence, the festival is full of momentous and really enjoyable moments. It is the occasion when the siblings solemnise the beautiful bond in a string called rakhi, which is holy, signifying protection, care, and love when tied to the brother’s wrist. Even though the spirit of this festival remains ageless, the way one celebrates it is undergoing a change.
Particularly in view of our growing awareness about environmental sustainability. The date for Raksha Bandhan falls on August 19, 2024, and this time the emerging trend will be an eco-friendly rakhi. These rakhis would be symbolic not only of love but also of commitment to saving the environment.
Why are Rakhis eco-friendly and sustainable?
Most of the traditional rakhis are embellished with synthetic olefins like plastic beads, glitter, and synthetic threads. Their disposal contributes to a great extent to environmental pollution. If we opt for sustainable and eco-friendly rakhis, we will be a step closer to reducing our ecological footprint by going for sustainable and eco-friendly rakhis. The reasons to switch are overwhelming:
Biodegradable Material: Eco-friendly rakhis come from natural materials like cotton, jute, seeds, and bamboo. All these materials decompose naturally and do not leave any harmful residue behind.
Help to the Local Artisan: Most of these sustainable rakhis are handmade by local artisans applying their traditional skills. When we buy them, we help support the local crafts and the livelihood of those local artisans. Those rakhis, which are made from natural dyes and organic material, are non-toxic and safe. There is an assurance of the safety of the skin, especially that of children, and no hazardous chemical pollution of the environment. The most innovative sustainable rakhi trend for this festive season is the plantable rakhi. It had seeds inside that could be planted after the festival, symbolizing a bond that grows and nurtures the environment.
How to Celebrate Raksha Bandhan Sustainably.
The spirit of celebrating Raksha Bandhan extends beyond selecting an eco-friendly rakhi. Here are a few tips to make your celebrations more environment-friendly:
Eco-Friendly Gifts: While gifting is an integral part of Raksha Bandhan, it can also be environmentally friendly. Instead, go for gifting experiences or reusable, sustainable products such as organic apparel, handmade crafts, or planting a tree. Minimalist Wrapping: Wrap the gifts in recycled paper, cloth, or reusable gift bags to cover up the presents in order to minimise the waste created by decorative materials.
Home-Cooked Feasts: Prepare traditional feasts with locally sourced, organically farmed ingredients. This tradition helps not just in supporting the local farmers but also cuts down on the carbon footprint that gets accumulated through shifting the food order.
Spread the word: Share it with friends and family, spread awareness, and adopt sustainable behaviour when rejoicing over the goodness of eco-friendly celebrations.
This Raksha Bandhan, let’s be conscious of celebrating this bond of siblings in a manner that does not harm our relationship or the planet. Much like a sustainable and eco-friendly rakhi would work towards the noble cause of saving not only the environment but also leaving behind a legacy in terms of responsibility and care for the coming generations. This Raksha Bandhan, celebrates ties of love, protection, and a renewed commitment to the Earth, for we protect our loved ones best when we protect the world we all share.
Happy Raksha Bandhan!
