Eco Shifts – JD Design Awards 2024

Prahalya K is an MSc Interior Design student at JD School of Design in Bangalore. She has presented a very innovative project, “Eco Shifts,” for the JD Design Awards 2024. By renovating a conventional 1 BHK apartment, she has been able to transform it into a very spacious and sustainable 2 BHK environment. This contemporary project seeks to offer solutions that merge productivity, space efficiency, and environmental responsibility with the challenge of high rent and less space for migrants moving to Bangalore.

This “Eco Shifts” project envisions two floors—the lower floor accommodating a multifunctional space in which the living room and workspace are combined. The creative use of kinetic furniture, which is mobile and allows residents to customize their space to suit their needs and preferences, makes this possible.  On the ground floor, there is provision for privacy and functionality through a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, bed-space area, balcony, dressing area, and laundry facilities. Future-friendly, eco-friendly materials have been used to take care of energy efficiency, resource conservation, and responsibility to the environment.

JDDA 2024

This Project is a work of futuristic fiction with imaginative features like vertical gardens, sliding-panel convertible walls, modular storage solutions, integrated green spaces, and furniture made of sustainable materials with recycled or upcycled material components. Such elements would allow for maximal space and comfort use, along with conditions promoting healthiness and sustainability in the urban lives of migrants in Bangalore.
“Eco Shifts” focuses on eco-friendly, cost-efficient materials, with the most futuristic and eco-friendly materials that can enhance energy efficiency and resource conservation. Recycled and upcycled materials were used to create sustainable furniture, together with shades of nature and soft textures to display a sense of tranquillity and warmth. Colourful accents give energy and personality to the place. The general feeling is typical of flexibility and imagination; it therefore denotes fluidity in the spaces, easily accessible for work or leisure activities, in a contemporary and inviting way. The introduction of green spaces into the system permits binding with nature. Among innovative concepts—like vertical gardens and convertible walls—a sustainable and stylish urban life can be foreseen.

In that sense, “Eco Shifts” by Prahalya K is seen as a proto-typical creative venture that channels this spirit of futuristic design into a sustainable substitute for conventional Bangalore apartment living.
