Gateway to the Past of Interior Design — The JD School of Design students innovate and think creatively. This year, Gateway to the Past will be the display for the MSc 2024 students from the History of Interior Design module. As the exhibition takes place, it becomes a deep appreciation of the journey in which interior spaces and architectural design evolved over centuries rather than just a presentation of their academic work.
Curated with careful attention to detail, this exhibition aims to transport people into different eras through time thus offering them a unique opportunity to enter historical periods. The crux of this experience therefore lies in the relationship between design, culture, and societal transformation and how it would transcend the latter from being mere presentational prospects, opening a gateway for thinking about the development of human needs, values, and aesthetics in spaces.
Unveiling History Through Designa
The “Gateway to the Past” display is one way of recognizing students’ creativity and dedication as they identify important historical periods whose development in interior spaces they could draw from. Case studies presented not only look at the exteriors of historical buildings through discussions of architectural elements but also at the interiors representing each era.
Through every section of the exhibition, the visitor experiences completely different eras, so to speak, during which the aesthetic appeal and the functional property of interior design are transported through the ages. The grandiose Baroque to the simplicity and clean lines of mid-century modern design will take the students out to determine how interior design reflects societal values and cultural shifts in their guests.
Bridging the Past and the Present
Through the “Gateway to the Past” exhibition, they mean more than research presentations. They allow the students to acquire experiential learning regarding knowledge of historical design principles and spark conversations on the need to preserve architectural heritage.
An exhibition opens up an opportunity for visitors to reconsider how the past continues to reverberate through contemporary design. Painstakingly curated spaces encourage visitors to reflect on the fact that the choices made by previous generations still indeed reverberate in every space we work and live in. Whether it is specific materials, furniture styles, or spatial arrangements, the past never comes too close in the world of design.
A Celebration of Creativity and Hard Work
Finally, in the Gateway to the Past context, this presentation pays tribute to the efforts and creativity of the students of MSc 2024. Indeed, it stands where history, culture, and design richly merge into an educational and inspiring experience. Along the path, guided by the students through these interiors, we recall the very crucial role that design plays in narrating the history of the human experience and how those lessons learned are used to improve and expand the future of design.
