Interior Styling Module End DisplayThe MSc in Interior Design 2023 A & B batch students of JD School of Design culminated in an exciting and dynamic Interior Styling module end display. It could have been just a show; but was much more than that celebration of inspiration in creativity, collaboration and design acumen, rather. Each of the three had to create a set for a movie or series of his choice based on a 6′ x 6′ floor area. How innovatively they rose to the challenge remains an appreciative mile.

What was of course unique about this exhibition was that students were successful in merging their interior styling skills with the narrative storytelling approach. By choosing some of those poignant moments from films or series, they brought the narratives to life through set design skilfully transcribing the mood, character and setting of the stories the students chose into fully styled spaces.

Designing the Set: A Creative Adventure

The challenge was not simply to design a room, but to capture a story. “Each group was tasked with carefully selecting a scene and thinking of innovative ways to convey the emotions and period of that moment”. Their creative process included space planning, choice of colour and texture, playing with light, and the right props to advance the narrative. In this way, set design appeared as a canvas for storytelling, where every element was used to add depth and atmosphere.

Attention to detail was what was characteristic of each display. There were spaces from modern and slick to historical and cosy, which paralleled the diversity in the stories chosen by the students. Be it a gloomy film noir scene or some colourful moment from a romantic drama, the students managed to turn a blank space into a world that included character and emotion.

Hands-on Experience in Set Design

This is not only creativity but also an interior styling lesson where the students get hands-on experience in the art of set design. What each group had to do was to come together, be flexible with space, and tell a visual story using skilful design within a 6′ by 6′ set. It was a test of teamwork, time management, and problem-solving as they brought their ideas to life.

By working in a small space, the students had to think outside the box to make sure that their sets conveyed the right aesthetic impact. It is an excellent creative exercise because they tried overcoming challenges without compromising the integrity of their design concepts.

Learning Through Storytelling

What the module-end display entailed was more than just showing off one’s technical ability. After all, it also had to do with learning how to communicate through design. But for interior stylists, it’s important to know how to use space, colour, and materials in telling the story. Capturing the mood and tone of their chosen narratives through their displays, students showed a deeper understanding of design principles such as space planning, colour theory, and texture combinations.

Collaboration and Teamwork

The most precious output achieved from this project was creative collaboration and teamwork. Here, a student is forced to communicate his idea well, discuss it, and cooperate with the other members in achieving what they will have come up with. This is a fundamental skill in the world of design: even huge projects require the input of multiple perspectives.

What many students reported in their reflections is how the project taught them to listen to one another, to compromise, and to assist each other in building from the ideas of others. The result was a series of displays that coalesced with unbelievable cohesion, feeling very thought through and not just a reflection of talent but also the power of teamwork.

A Talent and Growth Display

Module End Display- The final display of the module reveals how much these students have developed since their first days in school. What took place from day one was transformed into this final project inside the classroom comprehensive realization of all they learned about interior styling and design principles. Their displays did not only demonstrate technical skills but also creative vision, problem-solving and readiness to face the challenges of the real world.

The exhibit is a treat for the visitor, who can get hands-on experience of how design can make and transform a space and bring a story alive. This was always going to be a poignant moment for the students, a celebration in pride of the knowledge they had gained, of the practice as a group.

The abilities, creativity, and experience the students of the MSc 2023 A and B batches went through as they moved forward should be taken with them. It was not only the close of a chapter but a beginning for them in interior styling.

These are students who can translate tales of designed environments into realities, and who possess a knack for collaborative problem-solving; therefore, we can expect them to be leaders in the design industry. Where their creativity will take them from here is something we all are looking forward to seeing!
