Serene Multi Activity Amphitheatre – JD Design Awards 2024

Raafiya Fathima is a hardworking student at JD School of Design in Bangalore, who has presented a compelling project for the JD Design Awards 2024: “Serene Multi Activity Amphitheatre,” involving sensitive and inclusive design for a multi-functional space wherein the deaf and mute may participate in a multitude of artistic and co-curricular activities developing their personality and character.

The inspiration behind the project was the urge to provide an all-inclusive, empowering place for the marginalised. While designing her space, Raafiya gained an in-depth understanding of the different challenges and capabilities of the deaf and mute communities. Activities that would be executed within the facility include live sketching, sculpture design, wood carving, visual arts, and performing arts.

At its root, it combines a classroom and an atrium so that there will be a view of nature to create an attachment. This new and innovative environment serves not only as an enhanced mode of education but also stands to be a kind of therapy zone, especially for people with sensory differences. This design considers inclusivity, creativity, and wholeness of education—that is, the overall interaction of the participants with space and each other in a stimulating and visually rich setting.

With views of breaking traditional ideas of a secluded learning facility, this project shall set up a venue to achieve multi-skill training focusing on refining artistic and vocational skills. The materials enhance the sensory experience and support the needs of users within this design. This would include natural elements within the space, such as large windows and open areas for natural light and greenery. Sound-absorbing materials create a feeling of calm, serenity, and comfort—free from distractions and more comfortable for people with sensory sensitivities.

“Serene Multi Activity Amphitheatre” is a multi-purpose space for running several activities and events, thereby including more people and increasing community involvement. The amphitheatre can be used to hold different performances, exhibitions, and workshops that turn out to be the most unforgettable area where participants can easily share their talents and get exposed to a large audience. Raafiya Fathima’s project, “Serene Multi Activity Amphitheatre,” visualises an environment for the deaf and mute sections of society. It would not be a learning centre but a hub where one discovers and polishes their talents in the realm of fine arts amidst a very supportive and encouraging atmosphere.
